About

ORAO began as Elset Inc in 2010, providing P&C engineering services specifically for high voltage industrial projects. ORAO Inc was founded in 2020 with a clear vision: to offer our unique engineering and technical services for all other industry sectors. To date, ORAO has successfully delivered over 150 projects across Ontario and Canada as well as overseas. Our Team is built on a combined technical experience of over 75 years on projects of various sizes and complexities in all industry sectors. 
ORAO Inc is one of only two non-utility member entities of the Northeast Power Coordinating Council (NPCC), a regional entity whose purpose is to ensure the reliability and stability of the entire interconnected power grid within the Northeastern United States, Ontario, Quebec, and all of Eastern Canada. The NPCC is one of six regional entities which make up the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), a not-for-profit, international regulatory authority dedicated to effectively and efficiently reducing risks to the reliability and security of the bulk power system for all of North America. One of our founders participated in the development of North American standards for power system operations, monitoring and compliance, co-authored IEEE publications and was selected to provide training to P&C engineers across North America.
ORAO provides engineering and technical support services for power generation (including renewables and BESS systems) and HV/LV distribution projects, either as a third-party engineering and testing firm or as the project engineer. ORAO also offers agency services for new connection or capacity increase applications to major utilities and governing bodies such as the IESO and ESA, including the preparation of engineering documentation such as feasibility studies, CIA & SIA reports, and power system studies.

ARC FLASH PROTECTION MANAGEMENT PROGRAM (AFPMP)
It is estimated that approximately 200 arc flash accidents occur each year in Canada alone. Although highly preventable, such accidents mainly occur due to human error, unsafe work practices, inadequate hazard communication/identification, and equipment failure or malfunction. Arc flash incidents are more common in organizations with insufficient or non-existent arc flash and electrical safety policies and facilities with outdated or non-existent arc flash studies. Often incorrectly equipped, arc flash PPE intended to be the last line of defense. 
Arc flash prevention and safety begin with management.
With large systems, an organization faces significant challenges to always ensure full compliance with all required Codes, Regulations and Standards while also maintaining up-to-date records of electrical worker training and documentation. Arc flash standards are relatively new to the industry and often misunderstood both by workers and employers. While many organizations demonstrate a resolute willingness to fully address electrical and arc flash safety, developments in arc flash hazard research and lessons learned from real-world incidents often lead to major changes with each three-year update of the Canadian National Standard for Workplace Electrical Safety (CSA Z462). Arc flash safety falls within Ontario legislation (OHSA and WSIA) which requires employers to ensure a safe workplace and provide all necessary means for workers to conduct their work in a safe manner.
ORAO has developed a framework for ensuring top-down compliance with all arc flash safety requirements, extending to external contractors who perform electrical work within the property. The AFPMP is a comprehensive program tailored to an organization based on its facilities and operations, intended to build a culture of arc flash and electrical safety.

As the owner's engineer for the Jungbunzlauer Canada Plant in Port Colborne, ON, ORAO oversees every major facility and system expansion by providing support for 115 kV system capacity increase applications, system design, procurement specification and support, system studies and ESA approvals.
